1. All over the world, people welcome the new year for it is one of the oldest of all holidays. Most New Year celebrations focus on family and friends. It is a time to reflect on the past and envision a future, perhaps, in a world where people live together in harmony.

(Trên toàn thế giới, mọi người chào mừng năm mới vì đây là một trong những ngày lễ lớn nhất của mọi người. Hầu hết các lễ mừng năm mới tập trung vào gia đình và bạn bè. Đó là thời gian để suy nghĩ về quá khứ và hình dung tương lai, có lẽ, trong một thế giới mà mọi người sống cùng nhau trong sự hòa hợp.)

2. Koreans celebrate January 15th by the lunar Korean calendar. It’s the first time of the year that the moon becomes full. This celebration is called Daeboreum and its main purpose is to wish for health for the year.

3. For more than 1,000 years, Bulgarians have celebrated our national holiday on March 1st called Baba Marta, or Grandma March. “Mart” in Bulgarian is the name for the month of March. This holiday marks the coming of spring. Bulgarians wear a small special ornament made of red and white yam called Martenitsa on this day.

4. The Oktoberfest, or October Fest, is very big celebration in Germany. It celebrates a time when the King of Bayern (Bavaria) had a big wedding. This wedding lasted eight days and lots of people went to see it. During the fest, people drink lots of German beer and eat lots of a special cake called Pretzeln.

(Lễ hội Oktoberfest, hay Lễ hội tháng 10, là một lễ hội rất lớn ở Đức. Nó kỷ niệm một thời gian khi vua Bayern (Bavaria) đã có một đám cưới lớn. Đám cưới này kéo dài tám ngày và rất nhiều người đã đến xem nó. Trong suốt lễ hội, mọi người uống nhiều bia Đức và ăn nhiều bánh đặc biệt gọi là Pretzeln.)

5. At the beginning of February every year, Japanese celebrate the “Bean Throwing Festival” at temples in Japan. Selected men and women throw beans from the stage at the temple to the crowds wishing to drive the evil spirit away and bring the good luck that year.
